How to Instantly Stop Bleeding Gums

Problems like bleeding gums is a sign of poor gum health that you need to address immediately. Gum bleeding can be triggered by many factors including plaque build-up, vigorous brushing, injury, pregnancy, and inflammation. Regular gum bleeding can also happen due to an underlying infection which needs to be treated by a dentist. However, for instant relief, you can try these practical methods to stop bleeding gums.

1. Follow Good Oral Hygiene

Poor oral hygiene may be the reason behind your bleeding gums. Poor oral health results in plaque build-up near the gum line that leads to gum inflammation. Plaque is a sticky layer that forms over your teeth and gums, and it contains bacteria. If you don’t brush or floss properly, the bacteria can spread and lead to tooth decay or gum disease.

2. Use the Right Toothbrush

People suffering from gum sensitivity should choose extra soft toothbrushes. The ADA considers both manual and electric toothbrushes equally effective and recommends brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush for 2 minutes twice a day. Also, replace toothbrushes after every 3 to 4 months, or earlier if the bristles look tattered.

3. Use a Damp Gauze

Gently press a clean and moistened gauze against the affected portion until the gum bleeding stops. A weak immune system or another health condition may cause your gums to take longer than usual to stop bleeding. In this case, consult with your dentist to learn about the best method to stop the blood flow.

4. Use an Ice Pack

Hold a small ice pack or an ice cube for around 10 minutes against the bleeding gums to help relax the gums. Ice packs are very effective in reducing mouth bleeding and swelling caused by minor mouth injuries or gingivitis. If you can’t control the bleeding, consider visiting a dentist.

5. Rinse with an Antibacterial Mouthwash

An antibacterial mouthwash can effectively treat and prevent bleeding gums. They eliminate bacteria and decrease inflammation to relax sore, swollen, and bleeding gums. These mouthwashes can also prevent gingivitis that often causes gum bleeding problems.

6. Using a Warm Salt Water Rinse

A warm salt water rinse can help decrease the bacteria and improve healing of bleeding gums. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the oral salt rinse can be prepared by adding half a teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water. Swishing with the salt rinse helps to cleanse the affected area.

7. Apply a Turmeric Paste

Turmeric has natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Applying a turmeric paste over your gums can improve gingivitis symptoms and helps in controlling the bleeding of gums. Many scientific studies have discovered anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric in individuals who used these gels twice every day for around 10 minutes.

8. Avoid Smoking

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking is a significant contributor to gum disease. Quitting smoking will benefit your entire body, and will greatly improve your dental health. You will notice a quick improvement in your overall oral health once you stop smoking.

9. Try Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy to remove bacteria from the mouth. It involves swishing of certain types of oil in the mouth for around 20 minutes. According to the supporters of Ayurveda, oil pulling action helps to remove the bacteria from the mouth. Some oils like coconut oil have an intrinsic antibacterial property. However, scientific evidence cannot support this technique.

10. Avoid Processed and Sugary Foods

Frequent consumption of starchy, processed foods like refined bread, cakes, potato chips, and cookies may lead to gingivitis and gum bleeding. Starchy foods can get stuck to the teeth and gums, and eventually break down into sugar that can lead to gum inflammation, gum bleeding, and increased tooth decay problems.

Minor gum bleeding can be adequately addressed by using the remedies listed above. It’s also essential to practice good oral hygiene and treat underlying problems to prevent potential gum bleeding problems. Visit a dentist for continued or excessive gum bleeding.
