What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that encloses your entire tooth surface and helps in restoring your tooth to its original shape and size. A dental crown is used to protect and strengthen your tooth in case it cannot be restored with other dental restoration procedures such as, fillings.

Dental crowns are made from different materials. However, porcelain (tooth colored crown) is the most popular and widely used one. Porcelain crowns have the appearance of natural teeth as they blend easily with the rest of your teeth, giving you a beautiful and natural smile. They are durable and can last many years, but they may need to be replaced, just like other dental restorations.

Why Do You Need a Dental Crown?

You may need a dental crown for the following reasons:

  • Broken, chipped or fractured teeth
  • Decayed or missing teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement procedures like dental implants
  • Large or fractured fillings
  • After a root canal procedure
  • Used as an anchor in a dental bridge and denture procedure

Our Dental Crown Procedure

Our dental crown procedure usually spans over two visits at our dental office. During the initial appointment, we take several molds (or impressions) of your teeth that are used to create your dental crown. We use one of the molds to create a temporary dental crown that is placed on your tooth until your new dental crown is fabricated by the dental laboratory.

During the procedure, our dentist will numb your tooth, remove any decay, and shape the surface before fitting the temporary crown. The temporary crown is placed with the help of temporary cement. The dentist will then check your bite to make sure you are able to bite properly.

In the second visit, we remove your temporary crown, clean the tooth and carefully place your new crown ensuring the bite and spacing are accurate.

We will provide care instructions to take care of your new crown. Regular dental visits are important to improve the health and longevity of your crown.
