What Is a Porcelain Inlay?

A porcelain inlay is a custom fit filling made of tooth-colored porcelain, which is permanently cemented into the tooth by your dentist. It is utilized to healthfully repair your teeth that have been damaged by decay/trauma or have large defective fillings. Porcelain inlays are an ideal alternative to the conventional silver and composite fillings. Also, they are more conservative than crowns because less tooth structure is removed in the preparation of these inlays.

As with most dental restorations, porcelain inlays are not always permanent and may require replacement. However, they are highly durable and will last many years, giving you a beautiful, long-lasting smile.

You Need Porcelain Inlay Restoration for:

  • Broken or fractured tooth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Tooth decay
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings

Our Procedure

The porcelain inlay procedure usually requires two appointments. In your first appointment, our dentists will take several highly accurate impressions (molds) that will be used to create your custom fit inlay as well as a temporary restoration.

While the tooth is numb, our dentists will remove any decay and/or old filling materials. The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared to properly fit a porcelain inlay restoration. A temporary filling is then applied that helps in protecting the tooth while the porcelain inlay is being made by the dental laboratory.

At your second appointment, your new custom fit inlay will be carefully cemented into the tooth. A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure a proper fit, as well as to assure that your bite is comfortable.

What to Follow After the Procedure

Usually, after the procedure, tissues around the tooth might become sore and sensitive. You should temporarily avoid crunchy and hot or cold foods. Although, these minor problems will resolve themselves in a few days. You will also receive a set of care instructions at the end of your treatment. Follow good oral hygiene, a proper diet and regular dental visits to aid the life of your new porcelain inlays.
